Kiwifruit and Chickens

Blogging
We're about midway through our kiwifruit season, which is not a good time to start a blog, but I think I've reached the point of "now or never."

I have plenty of excuses for going the "never" or at least "later" route - surgery earlier this month that I'm still recovering from; trying to retain some semblance of sanity while raising a house squirrel that can't be released until spring; finding time to give proper attention to our newest family member, a Goffin Cockatoo; refereeing several squirrel/cockatoo squabbles; all while continuing to stress to Rocky, our Border Collie, that the squirrel and cockatoo are both "babies" and thus off limits to his herding instincts and/or appetite.

Back to the kiwifruit!
On the plus side, our crop was excellent this year and the fruit was the largest we've ever seen! Customers said they looked more like potatoes than kiwifruit.

On the minus side, we lost probably 1/3-1/2 of the crop due to an early frost. We knew it was coming and would have had time to pick at least some of the fruit but we didn't have a place to store it. We only have room for about 6 bins at a time so all we could do was cross our fingers and hope that the weather reports were wrong. Wouldn't you know, for the first time this year the forecasters were right on the money!

Chickens
The chickens are my project but luckily my hubby helps out with the daily opening and closing which consists of locking everything up at night in their "safe houses" and letting them out again in the morning. This keeps them safe from our local nighttime predators, such as skunks, opossums, raccoons, bobcats, and mountain lions. Plus, we have a friend staying here that does the majority of the cleaning, feeding, and watering, especially during the winter when the cold makes it hard for me to function due to Systemic Lupus and Reynauds.

With all this help, I know it must seem like I don't have to do much of anything with the chickens except love and play with them, but believe me, there is still plenty to keep me busy. More about that in the next blog.

  9. Hi Sheri, We bought 3 silkies from you last year and love them! However, the last rain storm was so bad, that the wind pushed our coop over and landed on one of our silkies, (Elvis was his name, best silkie ever! ) Now, my husband and me are separating and i can't take the other 2 with me. I am too nervous to list them, because i am worried they will go to a bad home or someone will just eat them. Would you be willing to adopt them back or suggest a family who is looking, that are reliable? Please get back to me as soon as possible. My number is (530) 845-0170. Thank you, Nena

  12. Sheri,

It makes my heart sing to read about your farm. It so wonderfully refreshing to hear about animals being respected and cherished. I grew up on a farm with angora bunnies and lots of hand raised free range chickens. I have a small coop of my own now and I am looking for some frizzle/sizzle eggs to hatch to add to my silkies and cochins. Would you be willing to sell/ship eggs? I know you cannot guarantee hatch rates, but i would be willing to take the risk. You have such lovely ladies! My email is aklytton@gmail.com

  25. Hi, I'd like to buy 3 silkies; white, buff and black. I'd drive up to get them. How much are they? Rebeccaschetter@gmail.com

  26. Hi Sheri! My children and I bought 3 beautiful silkies from you whom we adore. We have a problem with our buff named Becky has been spending nearly all day every day for the last month huddled under their chicken ladder. She used to sneak under there to lay but never for long periods of time. She hasn't laid in a long time either. When we take her out she acts normal, pecking and hunting about for bugs but she soon retreats back to her little hiding place rather than stay out with her bestie Alison. What should we do?

  32. The worst time has passed”However, it is true that there are more improvements than before...because of the rising numbers of people living with HIV in the state of Nevada. How could they stigmatize all of them? Therefore everything becomes a little easier and we start to share everything... We also started to invite and visit each other in a community. You know, it is six years since I started taking antiretroviral drugs...Yet whatever problems I face, the worst time has passedWhen I was evicted from the family home by my mother, my father rented a small room for me. But my mother and brothers believed that having HIV was my own fault – and that I deserved to be punished...I also considered myself unworthy and without hope... But I have a child and eventually I convinced myself to live for my child’s sake.
My mother knew nothing [about HIV]. She didn’t understand anything. Do you know why? She didn’t have [the chance] to go out of the house and communicate with society. However, my father does interact with the community. I know his friends are mature and dignified africa america. So he has a better understanding than her.My father came call me on a sadfull day sitting on my couch about a friend of his from africa who introduce him to Dr Itua Herbal Center in africa in which he advise we should purchase his herbal medicine to cure my hiv so we did and Dr Itua prescribed I should drink the herbal medicine for two weeks to cure although we were so curious about the whole thing ,I finished the herbal medicine like he advised then he talked to me to visit my nearest clinic for check up I did and now I'm totally cured from Hiv my father was my rock and I and my family are now happy together also Dr Itua has be helpful in my community ever since he cure my Hiv so why I'm leaving  my story on here today is to reach out someone out here to hope on God and never give up no matter the situation you that you are facing especially through this pandemic seasons which has really taught us all on how we should be helpful to each other and cherish one another.Dr Itua cures the following diseases.....  Brain cancer,Gestational trophoblastic disease,Head and neck cancer,Ovarian cancer,Hodgkin lymphoma,Herpes,,Liver cancer,Throat cancer,
